Bornean orangutans are affected by gold mining
One of the lesser-known threats to our primate relatives is gold mining, which is affecting primate populations in Africa, Asia and South America.
Many of us appreciate jewellery and other items made from gold, silver and platinum without being aware of the huge price that has been paid by wildlife in regions where these precious metals have been mined.
It is not just fauna and flora that are harmed either; the use of mercury in gold extraction is damaging to the environment and to human health. It is a water and air pollutant, killing fish and other wildlife and damaging the nervous systems of local people.
The good news is that IPPL (UK) is running a special jewellery recycling appeal so that we can all do our bit to tackle this problem and raise funds for primate welfare and conservation at the same time.
How it works
Please donate ANY unwanted jewellery (e.g. gold, silver, costume jewellery, watches…) so that all of your unwanted items can be turned into a donation for us. Even damaged, broken and incomplete items will help; so all the odd earrings and snapped chains are a great start!
To send your jewellery, you can parcel it up in your own packaging and post free of charge to: IPPL, FREEPOST, CENTRAL RECYCLING. Alternatively, you can request special freepost envelopes by contacting us at enquiries@ippl-uk.org.
